Re: Credit Card Fraud

Afternoon

Sorry it's taken me a while to find the answer to your question, so:

  1. Where fraud spend actually occurs frequently at a retailer, we safeguard customers via fraud profiling systems which are very frequently updated with "rules" based on the latest fraud trends and the likelyhood of fraud based on your normal spending patterns on your card. This will involve where there is a high ratio of fraud vs genuine customer transactions at the same retailer. When the fraudulent transactions at the retailer drop (due to the rules), the rules are removed so we dont impact too many genuine customer transactions.
  2. Where customers transact genuinely with their card at a retailer, their details can subsequently be compromised by criminals e.g. by hacking into the retailer's processing systems. This is known as a Common Purchase Point (or CPP). The fraudsters then use the compromised card data to perform fraudulent transactions at other retailers. Once we identify a CPP we will take steps to identify and protect customers at risk e.g. by applying "at risk" markers that are used in conjunction with the rules detailed above.  We (and other Banks) work together to identify CPPs and share this information with other Banks to identify and protect further cards that may also have been compromised at the same time that have yet to be used fraudulently. We also share information with the retailer's bank and law enforcement in relation to CPPs.

Does this info help?

I found it really interesting speaking to the fraud team, and understanding all the different ways they work to keep our money safe!!
